It looked like a sci-fi film. A winged sportscar sped down the runway on four wheels, suddenly it became airborne and climbed into the sky within seconds. But, it was not a scene from sci-fi, nor it was a visual created using AI. It was a flying car. The first-ever flight of a flying car! After years of research and different types of experiments on prototypes, the flying car company made history by taking the world’s first car flight with a passenger.

First passenger of a flying car

According to 'New York Post', French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre became the first passenger of a flying car as he soared twice through the Slovakian skies in KleinVision’s AirCar before hundreds of enchanted onlookers.

Talking to 'Sky News', Jarre said, "One second you speak to the driver, and next, you are up there in the air. An amazing experience."

Speed: 120 mph

Invented and piloted by Professor Stefan Klein, this vehicle transforms from an automobile to a flight-ready aircraft in minutes. The machine flies at a speed of up to 120 mph at altitudes up to 8,000 feet high. It was approved for flight in 2022 following more than 200 successful takeoffs and landings. The AirCar became the first flying car to complete an intercity flight in 2021. It runs on a 1.6-liter BMW engine.

When can you buy AirCar?

KleinVision’s co-founder Anton Zajac expressed hope that it will be market-ready in a year. He also said that he hopes to run the flying car on batteries when the technology catches up.

In a statement issued on the occasion, he said, "We are bridging the gap between the road and the sky, giving cars the freedom they symbolized 50 years ago."

Another flying car

On the other hand, Silicon Valley-based startup SpaceX-backed Alef Aeronautics has claimed to have received the pre-sale orders for about 3,000 flying cars. It unveiled its 850-pound, two-seat car, at the Detroit Auto Show last year. It is an electrical vertical takeoff and landing vehicle (eVTOL). It can reach a speed of 110 miles per hour in the air and up to 35 miles per hour on the ground.
