Florida's Allure: Jeff Bezos joins the ranks of billionaires relocating to the sunshine state

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos recently announced his decision to relocate to the opulent Indian Creek, nestled within the idyllic Miami-Dade County from the Seattle area. Two years after stepping down as Amazon's CEO and having lived in the Seattle area for over thirty years, Bezos decided it was time for a significant change. He shared the news on his Instagram account while revealing his reasons for this momentous move while also expressing his desire to be closer to his parents and the city where he attended high school.

What distinguishes Bezos' decision are his recent real estate acquisitions in Indian Creek, further cementing his presence in this affluent community. Over the past five months, he acquired two luxurious properties, marking a significant investment in Miami's upscale real estate market. The first purchase was a magnificent $68 million mansion in an off-market transaction in June, followed by a $79 million adjacent property in October.



Indian Creek, where Bezos now calls home, is a picturesque 294-acre man-made barrier island with just 41 residences, all discreetly situated along a single road known as Indian Creek Island Road. The island's population stands at a mere 84 individuals, and it's noteworthy for being home to a select group of high-profile residents and billionaire landowners.

Bezos explained his decision in a social media post, stating, "I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren [Sánchez, his significant other] and I love Miami." Additionally, he mentioned the relocation of more of his aerospace company, Blue Origin's operations to central Florida's Cape Canaveral. While this transition holds excitement, Bezos emphasized the emotional aspect of his decision, indicating a personal connection to the move.

The latest addition to Bezos' real estate portfolio in Indian Creek is a stunning 7-bedroom, 14-bath estate that boasts breathtaking bay views on one side and overlooks a golf course on the other. Complementing this property, his neighboring mansion features an additional three bedrooms and three bathrooms. These acquisitions join a collection of ultra-luxurious properties owned by Bezos, which includes the nine-acre Warner Estate in Beverly Hills, purchased for $165 million in 2020. Bezos also holds residences in Washington D.C., Manhattan, and Maui. Notably, his two properties in the Seattle area, acquired in 2010, are not currently listed on the market, and there has been no comment from Bezos' representatives regarding their status.

Jeff Bezos isn't the first billionaire to relocate to Florida, known for its tax-friendly policies. Over the past two decades, the number of Forbes 400 list members relocating to Florida had doubled, reaching a total of 46, with other notable people like financier Ken Griffin and Paychex founder Tom Golisano. Bezos' arrival will elevate this number to 47, showcasing the allure of Florida among the world's wealthiest individuals.

• Retired NFL star Tom Brady, who purchased a $17 million lot on Indian Creek in December 2020 and is in the process of redeveloping the property.
• Norman Braman, a billionaire art collector and car dealership owner, with an estimated property value of $60 million.
• Rakesh Gangwal, former CEO of US Airways Group and co-founder of India's largest budget airline, IndiGo, with an estimated property value of $70 million.
• Carl Icahn, a legendary corporate raider and billionaire activist investor, with an estimated property value of $60 million.
• The Kushner family, who acquired their Indian Creek home in December 2020 from Spanish singer Julio Iglesias.
• Eddie Lampert, an investor and hedge fund manager with an estimated property value of $90 million.
