Florida, Republican bastion, may be won by Kamala Harris this time

If a recent survey is to be believed, presumptive Democrat candidate Kamala Harris is within “striking distance” of Republican candidate Donald Trump in Florida. A traditionally Republican state, Flordia is the place where Ron DeSantis scored a 19-point blowout in the 2022 elections. But, this is no more the case in this battleground state. In the USA TODAY/Suffolk/WSVN-TV Florida survey, Donald Trump received the support of 47% of voters, while 42% of people backed Kamala Harris. The poll was conducted over the phone from August 7 to August 11.

Florida: Republican's stronghold

According to 'USA Today', Florida is the state where Donald Trump bested Joe Biden by 3.3 percentage points in the 2020 election, and DeSantis dominated two years later in the election for governor. Besides, Democrats fell dramatically behind Republicans in voter registration. The state now has one million more registered Republicans than Democrats.

David Paleologos, Director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center told USA Today, given those circumstances, he was surprised that Harris is within striking distance being only 5 points down. He also said Harris is "still an underdog, but she's a little bit closer than people might expect."

89% of Democrats excited to vote for Kamala Harris

However, Kamala Harris may be encouraged to know that Florida voters are matching the former Republican president's supporters in enthusiasm. About 89% of each group said they were excited to vote for their candidate. A USA TODAY/Suffolk national poll held in June found that about 60% of Joe Biden's supporters nationwide were excited to vote for him. It increased significantly after the incumbent president stepped aside and endorsed the vice president last month.

The first black president is viewed somewhat more favorably than Biden in Florida. This is evident by the fact that about 44% of voters say they have a favorable opinion of her compared with the president's 39%, though that is also within the poll's margin of error.
