Sam Aliassime and Marie Auger have two children. Malika was born in 1998, followed by Félix in 2000. Both children play tennis professionally.Sam wanted his children to carry both parents' surnames to honor their dual heritage, according to ESPN. Sam Aliassime's tennis coaching background and philosophy
In Togo, Sam grew up in a family with 11 boys who initially pursued soccer. He told Tennis Canada in February, 2023 that he played tennis at courts in his father's hotel before switching sports permanently."I couldn't dribble or do much with my left foot," Sam said. "I always shot and got passes with my right. My coach said 'Sam, forget about a career in soccer. You're not good enough with your left foot.' I was discouraged, but then I took up tennis full time."

Sam opened a tennis academy in Togo at 18 and later applied his experience to coaching Félix.
Early tennis training and development
Sam began training Félix Auger-Aliassime at age 4, alongside sister Malika. The tennis star told The New York Times about this early instruction period."Our parents wanted me to be a complete athlete," Félix told ESPN in March 2019. "So we played all sports, but tennis always was at the top."
Sam's own tennis weakness became a teaching tool for his son's development.
"That's when I began telling [Félix] that, if he wanted to play tennis, he had to be good in every aspect of the game," Sam said, noting they focused on developing Félix's backhand. "That didn't come out of nowhere. It's from my obsession with my left foot."
Transition to professional tennis training
Sam coached Félix until age 13, when the young player began training at Montreal's National Training Centre, per ESPN. Félix traveled to his first international tournament at age 10 without parental supervision.Marie told Le Journal de Québec in March 2022 that Félix never called home feeling homesick during early travels.

"He always prided himself on being independent," she said. "Even today, he's the one who makes his own career decisions. Of course, he consults his agent, his coaches, his parents. But he's very wise in his choices."
Marie Auger's role in tennis development
Marie Auger works as a child psychology teacher. Despite tennis being a family priority, education remained important in the Auger-Aliassime household.Félix told ESPN he made an agreement with his parents to "finish high school with good grades" before deciding whether to "go to university or go pro."
Current family dynamics and support
Marie confirmed in her 2022 Le Journal de Québec interview that she and Sam had divorced but continued collaborating on their son's tennis career."It makes me even happier when people tell me that Félix is a good person, that he's intelligent, because as a parent, I didn't raise a tennis player," she said. "I helped a child become a comfortable adult."
Marie continued, "It's always been a family project, with his father, even though we're divorced. And I look at him, and it's true that he's like that. But as a parent, you can't take all the credit for that."

Marie Auger's experience with son's professional success
In 2022, Marie took a sabbatical to travel with Félix during tournament seasons. She described the experience of watching her son's public recognition."As a parent, you're never prepared to have a child who has a public life," Marie told Le Journal de Québec. "When I arrive in a city and see his picture plastered on the buses, there's something a little surreal!"
She added, "But for me, Félix is still Félix. When we're at home, I forget all that. But I know it's part of his career, and he plays that role very well. He never gets impatient, and he's always very generous with his time."
Impact on tennis community representation
Sam told Tennis Canada he believes Félix's success has inspired increased participation among Black tennis players. Also read: Is Naomi Osaka Married? All you need to know about Japanese tennis star's relationship status
