An evacuation was carried out around the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday following a fire at a merchandise kiosk outside the venue, just before the UEFA Champions League match between Manchester City and Club Brugge.

A fire broke out at a merchandise kiosk outside the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, ahead of the UEFA Champions League match between Manchester City and Club Brugge.

The area around the stadium was quickly evacuated by stewards and security staff. The fire service later arrived and extinguished the blaze near the entrance to the Colin Bell West Stand.

The fire began at around 6 PM GMT in the kiosk near the stadium's main entrance, where fans had gathered to attend the presentation of the club's new January signings, the BBC reported.


However, the event was subsequently halted.

Manchester City statement

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Manchester City confirmed that there was a fire in “one of the outside merchandise kiosks, located near the entrance to the Colin Bell West Stand.”

“Emergency services are present at the scene and the fire has now been extinguished. The safety of all attending the match tonight is our top priority, and as such all events planned for West Stand reception have been cancelled, including the welcome event for new players, and the first team arrival,” Manchester City added.

In another post, the club noted that all entrances were later opened and fans were allowed to move around the stadium as per usual. “Thank you for your cooperation,” it added.

Manchester City, the 2023 Champions League winners, is set for a crucial contest, with a victory potentially securing their place in the competition's play-off round. This season, however, has been one to forget for the side, as they have won just twice in their first seven games.
