Fire dance horror: Performer engulfed in flames during zoo fire show; jumps into river to escape blaze

A fire dance performance at a wildlife park in Nantong, China, turned into a frightening incident when a dancer’s outfit caught fire mid-show, forcing her to escape and jump into a nearby river. The incident took place at the Nantong Forest Wildlife Animal Zoo, also known as the Nantong Forest Safari Park, in Nantong City near Shanghai on Wednesday (April 1).

Costume catches fire during performance

Video from the event features the young performer seated on sandy ground as staff ignited a large circle of fire around her for the act. She initially continued performing inside the burning circle, but things quickly went wrong.

As she started dancing inside the ring with flame, her skirt’s edge became caught in the flames. The fire quickly spread up her costume and toward her upper body.

Unable to extinguish the flames, the dancer rushed toward a river located just behind the performance space and jumped into the water. Reports state that the river immediately put out the fire within seconds, stopping the emergency. She was immediately assisted by staff members who pulled her out of the water and gave emergency help.

Injuries and official response

Authorities confirmed that the dancer did not suffer any serious injuries following the incident.

The fire act was part of an evening entertainment program that used controlled flames as part of choreography. What was meant to be a visually striking performance turned hazardous when the flaming ring failed to detach properly from the costume. The incident has sparked renewed discussion about the risks of fire-based entertainment and the need for stricter safety standards in live shows.
