Fiona, Britain's loneliest sheep, rescued from remote Scottish beach; fate uncertain as she's moved to a secret location
A stranded sheep named Fiona is rescued but faces controversy over her fate.

Fiona earned the title of "Britain's loneliest sheep" due to her prolonged isolation on a desolate shingle beach along the Cromarty Firth in the Scottish Highlands. The rescue, which took place over the weekend, was executed by five compassionate farmers who tirelessly winched Fiona 250 meters from the forlorn beach.
The Rescue
Fiona's plight was initially noticed by Jillian Turner, a kayaker, who had spotted the lonely sheep during a kayaking trip with her club two years ago. She expected Fiona to find her way back to higher ground but was shocked to find her still stranded on her recent journey. Turner recounted the first encounter with Fiona, noting how the sheep called out to them along the beach, expressing her desperation.Despite Turner's efforts to contact various animal welfare agencies about Fiona, no action was taken. Cammy Wilson, a local sheep shearer from Ayrshire and presenter on the BBC's Landward program, was moved by Fiona's story. He organized the daring rescue mission, which involved filming the challenging effort to save her.
Fiona was found in an extremely treacherous location, making the rescue attempts all the more daunting. During the mission, Fiona was placed in a durable canvas feed sack and carefully hauled to safety. Remarkably, the resilient ewe remained calm throughout the journey and even nibbled on some grass along the way.
After the successful rescue, Fiona received a much-needed shearing to remove her overgrown coat. However, an unexpected twist unfolded in her story. Plans to relocate Fiona to a local petting farm were met with protests by animal activists who believed that placing her there for public viewing would be inhumane.
Fate uncertain
Farmers were unnerved by what they described as a "scary" and "intimidating" visit from the activists, leading them to contact the police. Consequently, Fiona's fate remains uncertain, and she has been moved to a secret location for the time being.Farm manager Ben Best emphasized the need for Fiona to come to a safe and settled environment. He expressed frustration with activists who, despite claiming to act in her best interests, are preventing her transition to a well-suited home.
As Fiona awaits her future, her story serves as a reminder of the resilience of animals and the sometimes complicated nature of animal welfare efforts. Her rescue brought hope, but the controversy surrounding her placement highlights the challenges faced when caring for and advocating on behalf of animals in need.
