Finneas O’Connell is standing firmly behind his sister after her Grammy Awards acceptance speech ignited online outrage. As criticism spread following Billie Eilish’s blunt remarks on immigration, the Grammy-winning songwriter made it clear he had no patience for the backlash.

Why did Billie Eilish’s Grammys speech spark outrage?

Billie Eilish took the stage Sunday night after winning Song of the Year for “Wildflower,” marking her third win in the category alongside Finneas. The siblings became the most-awarded artists in Song of the Year history, joining their past wins for “Bad Guy” and “What Was I Made For?”

During her speech, Eilish thanked fellow nominees and expressed gratitude for the honor before shifting to a more serious note. “And as grateful as I feel, I honestly don’t feel like I need to say anything but that no one is illegal on stolen land," she said.

She went on to encourage continued activism. “It’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now and I feel really hopeful in this room and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting. Our voices really do matter, the people matter. And f–k ICE.”

Her words drew a standing ovation inside the venue but quickly triggered backlash online.

On Wednesday, Finneas responded to the criticism on Threads. “Seeing a lot of very powerful old white men outraged about what my 24-year-old sister said during her acceptance speech,” he wrote. “We can literally see your names in the Epstein files.”

The 28-year-old songwriter later reshared another post that mocked the recurring backlash aimed at his sister, suggesting that her message was consistently mischaracterized by critics, as per a report by The Wrap.

How did the Grammys reflect wider protest?

Billie Eilish was not alone in using the Grammy stage to speak out. Other artists, including Bad Bunny, Olivia Dean and Kehlani, also voiced similar sentiments during the ceremony.

“Ice Out” pins were widely visible on the red carpet, worn by stars such as Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber, Bon Iver, Jack Antonoff and Lady Gaga, underscoring how prominent the message had become throughout the night.
