Allen blasted 19 sixes — the most ever in a T20 innings — surpassing the previous record of 18 held jointly by Chris Gayle and Sahil Chauhan.
His whirlwind knock, which included a 34-ball century, powered the Unicorns to a league-record total of 269-5. The defending champions, led by Australian Glenn Maxwell, were bowled out for 146 in reply, handing the Unicorns a dominant 123-run victory.
With this win, The Unicorns kicked off the season with the biggest victory by runs in MLC history.
Allen dismantled a bowling attack featuring his fellow New Zealanders Ben Sears, Rachin Ravindra, and Glenn Phillips.
Ironically, it was Phillips who ended Allen’s fiery innings, taking a catch at long on off the bowling of Mitchell Owen in the 18th over to dismiss the 26-year-old opener.
