Argentina will face the Netherlands in the quarterfinal of the World Cup 2022 on Friday, December 9. The clash of the European and South American giants is likely to be a high-octane game as both teams are strong contenders to win the World Cup in Qatar.
Netherlands defeated USA 3-1 in the round of 16. However, while they dominated the underdogs, leaking a goal against the US would be worrying Louis van Gaal. Argentina faced a much tougher side, Australia, and won the game 2-1. The single goal in Australia’s tally was an own goal by Enzo Fernandez.
All eyes will be on Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who’s probably playing his last world cup. Messi already has three goals and an assist to his tally, though he’d be looking for much better statistics in his last world cup outing. In the words of the Dutch manager, the Netherlands will be seeking revenge against the South Americans for eliminating them in World Cup 2014.
When and where?
Netherlands vs Argentina starts at 2 pm ET/7 pm GMT on Friday, December 9. It will be the second quarterfinal, after Croatia vs Brazil, scheduled earlier on Friday. The game will be played at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar.
What happened the last time?
The teams' last match was a world cup clash in 2014 when Argentina beat the Netherlands in the semifinals 4-2 on penalties after neither of the teams could score in the allotted time. Argentina lost to Germany 0-1 in the finals, while the Netherlands ended in third place.
