FIFA World Cup 2022: Who is Mexico's coach?

As Mexico competes in the ongoing FIFA World Cup, it is time to know about its coach.

Following the 2018 World Cup, in which El Tri failed to make the quarterfinals for the seventh time in a row, the Mexico national team let Juan Carlos Osorio's contract expire and began the search for a new coach.

Mexico's exploration led them north to the United States. It had taken them to Georgia, where the Atlanta United football club was storming to top the important League Soccer and record-breaking attendance in only its consecutive year. Gerardo Martino was the driving force behind the Five Stripes' success that season, culminating in Atlanta winning the Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup on its home turf. Just after the championship was won by Atlanta, the worst-kept secret in professional soccer became a reality: Martino would be the next manager of the Mexican national team.

2022 is not Martino's first World Cup as a coach. He led an inexperienced Paraguay squad to the quarterfinals in 2010, the country's most excellent showing on the sport's most significant stage. Since Martino left in 2011 to coach his childhood club, Argentina's Newell's Old Boys, Paraguay has failed to qualify for a World Cup.

Martino enjoyed two outstanding seasons at Newell's as the team overachieved, and he used that success to become the head coach of FC Barcelona in 2013. Barcelona went unbeaten in its first 20 games under Martino, but the team fell in the Champions League and failed to win La Liga. He resigned after only one season.

Martino was chosen to coach Argentina's national team once more in 2014. Argentina finished second in Copa America twice during his reign.
