According to the Portuguese media, football legend Cristiano Ronaldo allegedly made the threat after learning he wouldn't start their round of 16 matches against Switzerland. The Portugal captain reacted violently after he was replaced in the team's previous game against South Korea. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo never threatened to quit the national team during the tournament in Qatar.

Prior to Portugal's World Cup start, Ronaldo left Manchester United amicably after a controversial interview in which the five-time Ballon d'Or winner criticized the team.

The 37-year-old star was taken off the field in two contests of Portugal, and coach Fernando Santos claimed that he did not like Ronaldo's response after being taken off again during the 2-1 group loss to South Korea. Goncalo Ramos started the match against Switzerland, replacing Ronaldo, and the 21-year-old scored three goals in the 6-1 victory.

Ronaldo, who played in 195 games for Portugal and scored 118 goals overall, came on as a late substitution but departed the field as his teammates continued to celebrate.
