FIFA World Cup 2022: Eight prominent teams that fail to qualify for Qatar football world cup

FIFA’s four-yearly global football tournament is set for November, next year, with qualifying set to wrap up soon. Here are the teams that have qualified for the tourney and what the rest will do.

A dominant 8-0 win against Belarus, back in March, was a clear marker of the European nation’s ambitions, with a 3-1 win against Estonia this week sealing qualification. The team has won six of its seven matches so far, drawing the other one.

They’ve played nine and they’ve won nine. Coming into the qualifiers on the back of a brilliant European championship, the Danish have continued their run, swatting everyone aside to reach Qatar.

Kylian Mbappe’s four goal haul saw France guarantee qualification as they won 8-0 against Kazakhstan over the weekend. They are only one of four teams to qualify unbeaten.

The biggest surprise package in qualifying, Serbia beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 2-1 on November 14 to seal a spot and push one of Europe’s best into the play-offs. Oh and they are unbeaten.

After their 2014 World Cup win, Germany dropped off the European map, with performances suffering. They are slowly building their way back, with a group topping performance under new manager Hansi Flick.

Luis Enrique’s return to the national team has seen them succeed, winning six out of their eight matches so far, despite not settling on a full time striker and losing Ferran Torres to injury.

In what could be star player Luka Modric’s last international tournament for his country, the Croatians have sealed qualifying with efficient performances in a group that also has Russia, Slovenia and Slovakia.

Following the weekend’s results Portugal are now confirmed to be in the playoffs, along with Sweden, Scotland and Russia, plus Austria, and one of Czech Republic or Wales. The final six will be decided by March ahead of the first winter World Cup.
