Field hockey player Matthew Dawson wins hearts by showing sheer will to play at Paris Olympics 2024, here's what he did

Australian field hockey player Matthew Dawson amputated his broken ring finger in order to participate in the Paris Olympics 2024, a move than has become a major example of the love for sports and will to participate for the nation at the big stage.

Australian hockey player Matthew Dawson has been sensational in the pre-Olympic competition and is a part of Australia's field hockey squad arriving at Paris Olympics 2024 this month. However, the injury sustained during the the pre-Olympic contest left Dawson's ring finger broken, which would have taken a long time to heal and he would have had to skip the Olympics altogether.

But Dawson is not among those who are willing to give up so easily. According to an NY Post report, he amputated his broken ring finger after due consultation with his plastic surgeon, in order to play in the Paris Olympics and in the other tournaments that follow. This sheer will to play has won the hearts of thousands of Australian sports enthusiasts.

Daqson stated that he took the top of his finger off, which was looking like the best option, based on not only the Paris Olympics 2024, but also the future competitions that lie ahead for him. According to him, this was a rather 'exciting challenge' which he, along with his wife took.


Australian coach impressed with Dawson's decision

Australian field hockey's national team coach Colin Batch was taken aback by this sudden call by Dawson removing the tip of his finger to play at the Olympics. Batch claims that he himself may not have taken such a call but since Matthew took the decision, it is great for him as well as the team.

Dawson, currently aged 30 years, has been a part of the national field hockey team of Australia since 2014, having appeared in countless international tournaments, including the previous editions of the Olympics. Dawson's injury incidents are not new as he was nearly losing his eye after being hit by a teammate's hockey stick back in November, 2018.
