Spencer was high school basketball player and attended university in Louisville. He also played four full seasons with Louisville Cardinals men's basketball team.
He had averaged 14.9 points and 8.5 rebounds. He had a shooting average of 68.1 per cent from the field during his stay with Cardinals.
Minnesota Timberwolves drafted Spencer sixth overall in 1990.
Spencer had stints of three seasons with Minnesota Timberwolves, and Golden State Warriors. He spent two seasons with New York Knicks. He had brief stints with Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs.
He played 213 games with Timberwolves, 184 games with Utah Jazz, 166 games with Golden State Warriors, and 50 games with New York Knicks, according to reports.
