The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall of Pearl Milling Company's Original Pancake & Waffle Mix as a Class I risk due to undeclared milk.

The company released the first voluntary recall on January 14 in response to concerns that the product may have been tainted with unreported milk, potentially leading to severe allergic reactions in certain individuals, as quoted in a report by Newsweek.

The Quaker Oats Company, a subsidiary of Frito-Lay, Inc., was the manufacturer of the product.

Why is the recall considered high-risk?

The recall is considered high-risk as using or being exposed to a product that violates the law will result in serious health consequences, including death in some cases, according to the FDA.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, 2–3% of children under the age of three have a milk allergy. Anaphylaxis, a rare and possibly fatal response that affects breathing and can put the body into shock, can be brought on by milk consumption by people with milk allergies.

Which states are affected?

Ten thousand containers of Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix were first recalled and sent to retailers in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Utah, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, and Wisconsin, according to the FDA categorization update. The code date for the recalled pancake and waffle mix is BBD SEP 13 25 P, and its UPC code is 30000 65040.

The product was available for purchase starting on November 18, 2024. The recall does not affect any other Quaker Oats Company or Pearl Milling Company products, reported Newsweek.

What should consumers do now?

Due to undeclared milk in a small number of boxes, Quaker Oats Company has recalled its Original Pancake & Waffle Mix. In complete collaboration with the FDA, the business informed the public on January 14, 2025. The FDA will keep an eye on the product to identify any negative health effects. The product should be thrown away or returned to the store by customers who bought it.
