The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) allowed Juul Labs to sell its e-cigarettes again in the U.S. market. This decision helped Juul after a federal ban in 2022 almost made the company go bankrupt, as reported by Wall Street Journal.

The FDA said Juul’s products help adult smokers more than they harm public health, including risks to young people. The approval includes Juul’s original vaporizer device and refill cartridges in tobacco and menthol flavors, according to the reports.

Juul’s problems and the ban

Juul had been a big name in e-cigarettes but lost a lot because their flavored pods were popular with teens, which caused a backlash. Juul’s sales dropped, and they faced many lawsuits, making things worse for the company. The 2022 federal ban on Juul’s device and flavored pods was stopped one month later after Juul appealed, and the ban was removed in 2024, as per the Reuters report.

Since 2016, the FDA has allowed 39 e-cigarette products to be sold in the U.S., including some menthol vapes from other companies like NJOY. The FDA said it approved five Juul products because Juul showed extra evidence that the products’ health benefits outweigh risks, especially the risk that they attract young people, as per the reports.

Juul’s future plans and FDA challenges

The approved products include the Juul device and tobacco and menthol flavor pods with nicotine levels of 3% and 5%. Juul’s CEO, K.C. Crosswaite said this is a big step for the company. The CEO also said Juul’s approved products are already sold in the U.S. and hope to replace many cheap disposable vapes from China that are in the market now, as stated in the report by Reuters.

Juul plans to apply to the FDA for approval of more products soon. The vaping industry thought the Trump Administration would make it easier to launch new vaping and smoking alternatives. Some companies have waited years for FDA approval or have had their applications rejected and fought back in court, like Juul did, as per reports.

The FDA has been criticized for taking too long to approve new products and for not stopping the illegal trade of unauthorized vaping products. The FDA said it needs more money and resources to fix these problems, as mentioned in the report by Reuters.
