The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has revealed that former US president Donald Trump stashed some classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago resort and compromised the US’s security as they were stored improperly. The stash had documents pertaining to intercepted foreign communications of intelligence from spies. The FBI said in a report after the search was conducted. The report has been filed in the court in Palm Beach, Florida.

The heavily censored document, which has been reduced to 38 pages, including attachments, has suggested to be revealed partially to the public. The reason cited by the judge is 'historical interest.'

The FBI further stated that the probe was initiated after 15 boxes of 'highly classified documents' were found missing by the National Archives and Records administration. There were also 25 records headlined 'top secret."

As per the report, 14 of the 15 documents had classified ones, prompting authorities to think that the former President could be having some more in his possession. The documents also contained data about inputs gathered under Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, 1978.

The documents that were in the possession of Trump were not to be seen by foreign nationals. The revelation convinced Judge Bruce Reinhart to approve the search of Mar-a-Lago. This search also led to a political backlash from Trump's supporters and had an effect on the November mid-term elections and Trump’s foray into the 2024 presidential race.

Trump has called this a 'ploy' by the FBI to discredit him, and there was nothing mentioned about 'nuclear' in those documents. What created a lot of shock for the FBI and Department of Justice was the fact that the former president had all these documents in his possession and stored in unsecured conditions even though 'classified' was written on them. Documents were recovered from Trump’s bedroom, closet, bathroom and storage areas.

According to Trump’s lawyer, the president has the right to declassify documents and can store them as classified records along with magazines, newspapers and presidential records. Also, presidential actions for classified documents didn’t warrant criminal proceedings against the former president. This response came when the authorities said that a lot of documents were mishandled and have been removed from folders and mixed together.

Trump’s office has brushed aside these reports saying that they were acted upon with political motivation and amount to nothing much.
