Fairport electric outage leaves 18,000 customers without power amid frigid temperatures

People in Perinton and the village of Fairport woke up Friday morning with no power after a major electric outage. The Fairport Central School District canceled all classes and activities for Friday because of the outage, as per the news reports.

Some students were already picked up by buses when the district announced the cancellation, and they were sent back home. Residents said power came back around 7:20 a.m., giving the first sign of recovery, reported by 13WHAM.

Fairport Electric, the municipal company that serves about 17,000 customers, is still giving more information, and officials are learning what caused the issue. WHEC reported that a problem with transmission lines knocked out power for 18,000 customers across the Fairport area.

Cold weather safety

Bryan White, the village manager and general manager of electric operations, said there is no estimated time for full power restoration. White also said there is an issue with National Grid lines that supply power to the area. With temperatures expected to reach only 26 degrees, White advised people to take safety steps because of the cold weather.

The school district said students on buses are being kept warm until they reach home safely. WHEC said they have a crew heading to Fairport to learn more and track how the outage is affecting people.
