How Lando Norris Can Clinch the Championship Today

Norris leads the standings with 396 points, followed by teammate Oscar Piastri on 374 and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on 371. After Saturday’s Sprint, in which Piastri won and Norris finished third, the gap narrowed, but Norris still retains control of the title fight.

The British driver will be crowned world champion with one race to spare if he finishes the race 26 points ahead of Piastri and 25 ahead of Verstappen, as per a report by Sky Sports. This effectively means Norris must:
Finish ahead of Verstappen, and outscore Piastri by at least four points.

The front of the grid is poised for drama, with Piastri on pole, Norris second, and Verstappen third.
According to a report by Sky Sports, two key scenarios could secure the championship for Norris today:
Winning the Grand Prix, ensuring he outscores both rivals by the required margin.

Finishing second ahead of Verstappen, with Piastri failing to finish on the podium.

However, Norris must finish inside the top eight to keep any chance of sealing the title today.

Is McLaren Favouring Norris Today?

Questions around team orders have gained steam, but McLaren has reiterated its neutral stance. CEO Zak Brown has publicly stated that the team will not interfere, even if it risks losing the championship altogether.

Earlier this month, Brown recalled the team’s 2007 loss, when McLaren chose not to favour either Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso. “We won’t do that,” Brown said, adding that he would prefer a repeat of 2007 rather than violating the team’s principles.

With Piastri only 22 points behind Norris, McLaren insists it will allow both its drivers to compete freely, especially with Verstappen still within striking distance.

What Are Piastri and Verstappen’s Chances?

While Norris holds the advantage, both Piastri and Verstappen remain firmly in contention. Piastri can still afford a DNF if Norris scores fewer than four points, though such scenarios remain slim.
A win for Piastri today would dramatically tighten the fight heading into Abu Dhabi. Verstappen, meanwhile, must ensure he leaves Qatar no more than 24 points behind Norris to stay alive in the title race, as mentioned in the Sky Sports report.

Given Verstappen and Norris would tie on race victories if both finish the season with seven wins, the tie-breaker would shift to second-place finishes, where Norris currently leads 8–4.
