  • New Mexico — April 30, 2026
  • South Carolina — May 1, 2026
  • Virginia — May 1, 2026
  • Louisiana — May 15, 2026

For everyone else, the deadline remains April 15.

How to File a Tax Extension With the IRS

If you are unable to file by your deadline, it is important to request an extension in advance. The IRS allows taxpayers to apply for an automatic extension in several ways:

Make a payment online and indicate it is for an extension using bank accounts, digital wallets, or cards
Submit Form 4868 electronically through IRS e-file or a tax professional
Mail a paper Form 4868, with optional payment of estimated taxes

Tax Extension Rules and Important Deadlines
