Explained: Why Virgin Islands subpoena Elon Musk and what is the lawsuit about?

According to a government filing on Monday, US Virgin Islands has subpoenaed Tesla CEO Elon Musk for documents in the government’s lawsuit accusing JPMorgan Chase & Co of helping Jeffrey Epstein in his sexual abuses.

US Virgin Islands subpoenaed Tesla CEO Elon Musk on April 28, but it did not come to light until Monday. Virgin Islands, which is suing JPMorgan in link to the sex trafficking acts committed by Jeffrey Epstein, seeks documents from Musk. Tesla CEO, however, has called the subpoena “idiotic” and denied any advisory connection to the sexual offender, Epstein.

Why Virgin Islands subpoena Elon Musk and what is the lawsuit?

Virgin Islands has pledged to “hold accountable those who facilitated or participated in, directly or indirectly, the trafficking enterprise” of Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in a prison cell in August 2019. In line with its efforts, the Virgin Islands has sued JPMorgan over the crimes committed by the late financier.

The government has also said that its investigation revealed JPMorgan “unlawfully” provided and pulled the levers through which recruiters and victims of Epstein were provided money.

Now, the filing revealed that the Virgin Islands believes Epstein might have referred or tried to refer Musk to JPMorgan as a potential client. Therefore, the subpoena seeks documents since January 1, 2002, in which the Tesla CEO communicated with JPMorgan or Epstein about the hedge fund manager or his role in Musk’s accounts and transactions.

The Virgin Islands subpoena also seeks documents that refer to fees that Musk paid either to Epstein or JPMorgan or any other documents regarding Epstein’s involvement in human trafficking or his procurement of girls or women.
