Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the former press secretary for Donald Trump, said on Friday that she had thyroid cancer surgery in Arkansas.

The 40-year-old Sanders, who is running for governor of the state as a Republican, said in a statement that during a checkup earlier this month, her doctor requested a biopsy on a suspicious region in her neck. The results of the test showed that she had thyroid cancer. "By the grace of God," she continued, "I had successful surgery today to remove my thyroid and nearby lymph nodes, and I am now cancer-free."

Dr. John Sims, a surgeon at the CARTI Cancer Center in Little Rock, said Sanders was treated for Stage I papillary thyroid cancer. In a statement, he said, "Sarah is now recuperating after surgery where we removed her thyroid gland and part of the surrounding lymph nodes in her neck."

"The operation went quite well, and I anticipate she'll be up and walking around even in the next day or two." He said the most typical form of thyroid cancer, he said, "has a great prognosis," in reference to her diagnosis. Even though she will require adjuvant radioactive iodine therapy and ongoing long-term follow-up, Dr. Sims said, "I believe it's fair to say she's now cancer free, and I don't foresee any of this slowing her down."

Sarah promised to return to the campaign trail "soon." She wrote in her statement, "I want to thank the physicians and nurses in Arkansas for their exceptional treatment, as well as my family and friends for their love, prayers, and support." I'm eager to hit the campaign trail again shortly. This story serves as a lesson to never give up in the face of adversity. I will never stop advocating for the citizens of our wonderful state as governor.
