Police mugshots show Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk
Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old suspect accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah university event, now faces serious charges including aggravated murder. Prosecutors are moving swiftly to seek the death penalty, citing the politically motivated nature of the crime and the circumstances involving children at the scene. As details emerge from court documents, text messages, and police investigations, Robinson’s personal background and the planning behind the assassination paint a complex picture of a young man.

Charges and court appearance

Robinson was formally charged in a Utah County courtroom with seven counts: felony aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious injury, two counts of felony obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and committing a violent crime in the presence of a minor. Wearing a suicide-prevention vest, Robinson appeared virtually in court and confirmed his identity but did not speak beyond that during the initial hearing.

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray emphasized that the decision to pursue the death penalty is based solely on the evidence and circumstances of the crime. Robinson allegedly targeted Kirk at a political event due to his views, killing him with a single rifle shot from a rooftop at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.

Robinson is “believed to have targeted Charlie Kirk based on Charlie Kirk’s political expression and did so knowing children were present and would witness the homicide,” Gray said, according to AP.

Confession and text message evidence

Prosecutors released court documents revealing a series of texts Robinson sent to his roommate and romantic partner, who is a transgender, transitioning from male to female. In these messages, Robinson admitted to the shooting, stating, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

He also left a note under his keyboard that read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.” When asked by his roommate, Robinson admitted, “I am, I’m sorry.” He expressed regret about involving his partner and urged deleting their messages and mentioned "If any police ask you questions ask for a lawyer and stay silent.”

Personal life and background

Robinson is in his third year at the Dixie Technical College as shared by his mother to the authorities. She also shared with police that over the past year, her son became more politically left-leaning and supportive of LGBTQ+ rights, sharply contrasting with those of his father and Kirk's conservative ideology.

She noted that he was dating a trans person, transitioning from male to female. Robinson’s roommate, to whom he confessed the crime, was later identified as his romantic partner hinted by his mother.

Robinson has two younger brothers, and his parents have been married for about 25 years, according to AP.

Arrest and surrender

Robinson was arrested last week, roughly 33 hours after the shooting. His parents recognized him in media images during the manhunt, confronted him at home, and after discussions with a family friend who was a retired deputy sheriff, persuaded him to surrender peacefully to authorities. During that time, Robinson also reportedly told his parents that he was thinking of killing himself.

Investigation and additional details

Surveillance footage captured Robinson’s movements on the day of the shooting, showing him carrying a rifle belonging to his grandfather onto the rooftop. DNA evidence on the trigger of the rifle and the towel around it helped link him to the murder. Robinson’s actions also included witness tampering leading to additional charges.

FBI Director Kash Patel testified before the Senate Judiciary committee that agents are investigating Robinson’s online activities, including participation in a Discord chatroom with over 20 members, looking into potential accomplices or broader conspiracies. Authorities maintain the shooting was premeditated and politically motivated but have found no direct links to wider extremist groups or cells.
