More than 30 Wales football fans have been arrested in Armenia ahead of the European Championships qualifying game, casting a shadow over the much-anticipated match.

About 1,200 supporters had gathered in the capital Yerevan for Saturday's crucial match. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) confirmed that 32 fans had been arrested, prompting involvement from the Foreign Office. The arrests have left the Welsh football community in shock and frustration.

A disheartening experience

Supporters described a disheartening experience, with Lefi Gruffudd, a fan expressing his anger and disbelief after being arrested following what he described as an enjoyable night in the city. As per BBC, Gruffudd detailed the mistreatment, stating, "They treated us insultingly, no water, no cell, nothing through the night. There is no explanation for why we were arrested, and we have been asking questions all the time but no answers. We haven't slept at all, and we're angry."

Another fan recounted being handcuffed and aggressively handled by the police, with officers allegedly teasing about potential six-month sentences. Gerallt Dafydd, who described the arrests as traumatic, emphasised that fans had done nothing wrong and were puzzled by the authorities' actions.

The arrests, believed to have occurred on Friday, raised concerns about the treatment of Welsh fans in Yerevan. Some were released ahead of the 18:00 kick-off time on Saturday, but the incident has spoiled what should have been a celebratory gathering of Welsh supporters.

FAW acknowledges the issue

In response, the FAW released a statement acknowledging the situation and stated, "We are aware of the situation and are in regular discussions with the travelling police and FSA Cymru (Football Supporters' Association) monitoring the situation." FSA Cymru serves as the fan embassy, maintaining contact with local authorities and assisting South Wales Police in liaising with law enforcement in Armenia.

Supt Steve Rees of South Wales Police, present in Armenia, commented on the unusual incident, saying, "Welsh fans have a good reputation when travelling abroad, so this is very much out of the ordinary." He assured that a delegation of Welsh police officers would continue to be visible, providing advice and ensuring the safety of travelling fans.

In addition, the Foreign Office affirmed its involvement, stating, "We are supporting the families of a number of Welsh football fans in Armenia and are in contact with the local authorities."

This unfortunate incident adds to the challenges faced by Welsh fans, as earlier in the week, a female fan reported a distressing taxi journey where the driver allegedly made inappropriate advances.

However, as the situation unfolds, the focus remains on Wales' disqualification from Euro 2024 as the team suffered a potentially devastating blow with a lacklustre draw with Armenia in Yerevan.
