Euclid space telescope sends first images, to study billions of galaxies in 6 years

Euclid telescope, the European Space Agency’s observatory, has been sent to capture pictures of billions of galaxies and study mysteries including dark matter and dark energy. Know more.

European Space Agency’s newest observatory, Euclid, has sent it first pictures of the cosmos. The space telescope was designed to investigate some of the universe’s biggest mysteries. Confirming the receipt of first pictures of the observatory, Giuseppe Racca, Euclid project manager at the European Space Agency said that it was credible to see a few galaxies, according to reports.

Euclid Telescope

Space observatory Euclid was launched on July 1 and it has been set up in its orbit 1.5 million kilometres away from the Earth. The scientists are happy with the performance of the space observatory and hope it to exceed the expectations.

Euclid Telescope: Six- Year Probe

ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher expressed confidence in the capability of the team behind the mission and hoped that Euclid would 95 percent of the universe. The space observatory will test and calibrate its equipment for next two months before beginning the survey of the sky for next six years.

Euclid Telescope: Billions of Galaxies

The space telescope will take the images of billions of galaxies. It is interesting to note that Euclid can send photographs a hundred times bigger than those captured by Webb’s camera. Its cameras won’t catch light contamination while taking the pictures. Images of galaxies will be taken by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer instrument, or NISP.

Euclid Telescope: Dark Matter

One of the main objectives of Euclid is to study dark energy, dark matter and other mysteries of the universe. Scientists believe that the dark constitute about 85 percent of all the matter, but is has never been detected.
Euclid Telescope: The Expanding Universe

In an epoch-making discovery in 1920, astronomers Georges Lemaitre and Edwin Hubble said that the universe has been expanding since its birth 1.3 billion years ago. But later it was found that the universe began to expand 6 billion years ago for the reasons not yet known.
