Euclid Fire shuts down 71 Freeway in Chino Hills flames jump highway threaten homes forward progress halted crews battle blaze in scorching heat

A fast-moving wildfire dubbed the Euclid Fire erupted Wednesday afternoon(July 23) in Chino Hills, forcing the complete closure of the 71 Freeway and sending flames dangerously close to homes in the area. The Euclid Fire is the latest in a series of fast-developing wildfires across Southern California this season, fueled by dry brush and rising temperatures.

The fire was first reported shortly before 2:08 pm, according to Cal Fire, and quickly escalated. Chino Valley Fire District said crews were on the scene by 2:39 pm, battling flames that jumped both sides of the freeway.

At one point, aerial footage showed the fire creeping toward homes, with bright orange flames licking close to backyards and thick smoke shrouding suburban streets. Fire retardant was seen covering the freeway as aircraft dropped loads from above.

By mid-afternoon, Cal Fire estimated the fire had grown to between 100 and 150 acres and was pushing toward Prado Dam, a key flood control structure in the area.

As of 2:55 pm, all lanes of the 71 Freeway were shut down at Euclid Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). A SigAlert was issued, and massive traffic backups stretched northbound to the 91 Freeway in Corona and southbound to Pine Avenue.

“Avoid the area entirely,” the CHP urged in a public statement. “There is no estimated time of reopening at this stage.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries or structural damages have been reported so far, though firefighters continued to defend homes through coordinated ground and air operations.

By late afternoon, authorities confirmed forward progress had been halted, thanks to aggressive containment efforts from Cal Fire, Chino Valley Fire, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Firefighters worked in blistering heat, cutting containment lines with bulldozers while helicopters circled overhead.

Residents in nearby neighborhoods were advised to remain on alert. No formal evacuation orders had been issued by press time, but some locals voluntarily left the area out of caution.
