Why is the Dollywood Express so important?

The Dollywood Express is one of the most storied attractions at the Tennessee theme park, with roots that stretch back more than six decades. The steam train originally opened in 1961 as Rebel Railroad.

In 1966, it was renamed Gold Rush Junction before being purchased by the Cleveland Browns football team in 1970. The attraction later became part of Silver Dollar City Tennessee in 1976, serving as the park’s flagship ride for a decade.

When Dolly Parton took over the park in 1986, she renamed it Dollywood and rechristened the locomotive as the Dollywood Express, cementing its place in the park’s identity.

When could the attraction reopen?

At this time, Dollywood has not announced a reopening date for the Dollywood Express. The attraction last underwent scheduled maintenance during the summer of 2025, as per a report by Inside the Magic.

It remains unclear whether the issues addressed during that earlier closure are connected to the current maintenance work. Park officials have not shared additional details about the cause or timeline.
