Emergency Alert test in US: Date, time, what will happen?

An Emergency Alert test will be conducted by the US Federal government. The test is scheduled to be held on October 4. We have all details for you.

US federal government is set to conduct a nationwide test of the emergency alert system in the United States on Wednesday afternoon. This test will involve sending alert messages to all cellphones, televisions, and radios, with the messages accompanied by sound and, on cellphones, vibration.

The primary objective of this test, scheduled for October 4, is to ensure the continued effectiveness of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) in warning the public about national-level emergencies. In the event that severe weather or significant events necessitate a postponement, the backup testing date is set for the following Wednesday, October 11.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are jointly conducting this test as part of their preparedness efforts for real emergencies. The goal is to verify the smooth operation of the emergency messaging system in the event of threats such as natural disasters, terrorism, or other public safety hazards.

Many are familiar with the distinctive sounds that accompany National Weather Service alerts and AMBER (America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response) alerts. The cellphone alerts on Wednesday will be delivered via the same wireless system.

The test is scheduled to commence at approximately 2:20 pm (Eastern Time) or 11:20 am (Pacific Time) on October 4.

The test involves two separate components: one for broadcast (radio and television) and one for cellphone alerts. Below are the specific details of the messages you can expect to see or hear.

The testing window will last for 30 minutes, but each individual should only receive the message once. In the event of an actual emergency on that day, the test may be postponed, with a backup test planned for the following week.

On cellphones, the alert message will read:

"THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed."
