Elon Musk’s Starlink secures FAA contract, raising concerns over government influence and ethical issues
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has finalised a deal with SpaceX to use its Starlink internet system for modernising IT networks. This decision has raised concerns about whether Elon Musk, the owns SpaceX, holds excessive influence ov...

Reports indicate that this decision has triggered concerns over potential conflicts of interest involving Elon Musk.
SpaceX is a private aerospace company that heavily relies on government contracts.
However, the value of this specific deal has not been disclosed. Bloomberg reports that under the contract, around 4,000 Starlink terminals are expected to be deployed over the next 12 to 18 months.
The FAA has acknowledged the urgent need for modernisation, a point highlighted in a December report by the Government Accountability Office titled ‘Urgent FAA actions are needed to modernise ageing systems.’
Ethical concerns surrounding Elon Musk’s role
Musk’s dual position — serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration while leading a company that secures federal contracts — raises ethical concerns. Critics say that while Musk pushes for deep government spending cuts, including reductions in FAA staff, his company continues to receive contracts from the agency, according to CNN.Also Read : Pope Francis maintains daily contact with Gaza’s Catholic community despite critical illness
FAA’s plans and Musk’s influence
As per reports, the FAA announced through X (formerly Twitter), a platform owned by Musk, that it has begun testing Starlink terminals in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and at two non-safety critical sites in Alaska. The agency has long been concerned about unreliable aviation weather data in Alaska, an issue the 2024 FAA reauthorisation bill requires it to address.Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed discussions with Musk about overhauling US airspace management, stating that Musk would help redesign the system quickly.
Musk has also criticised the FAA’s current IT provider, Verizon, stating on X that the Verizon system is failing and putting air travellers at serious risk.
Conflict of interest and ethical issues
Musk’s business empire — including SpaceX, Tesla and other ventures — is subject to regulation by multiple federal agencies, including NASA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Despite his often tense relationship with regulators, his companies continue to secure government contracts and incentives.Concerns are also growing about Musk’s potential financial gains from space mining, according to CNN.

FAQs
1. Why is the FAA using SpaceX’s Starlink for its IT upgrade?
The FAA’s outdated communication systems are due for modernisation under the 2024 FAA reauthorisation bill. Starlink is being introduced to improve connectivity, particularly in remote areas like Alaska, where weather data remains unreliable.
2. What concerns have been raised about Elon Musk?
Critics argue that it is problematic for Elon Musk to act as both an adviser to the FAA and the CEO of a company receiving FAA contracts. They highlight the contradiction in Musk advocating for FAA budget cuts while simultaneously securing lucrative government deals for his company.
