Authorities in Massachusetts suspect that a fire at the Tesla Supercharger station recently was an act of arson. This marks the latest in a series of attacks against Tesla vehicles, dealerships, and owners across the United States.

As per media reports, these incidents of attacks and arsons are coming amid Tesla CEO Elon Musk facing increasing backlash for his deepening political involvement, particularly his role in cost-cutting initiatives of the Donald Trump administration and his influence on government policies.

Some Tesla and Cybertruck owners have been facing harassment with their vehicles being vandalised and obscene gestures directed at them. Additionally, online retailers are using platforms like Etsy to sell bumper stickers distancing Tesla drivers from Musk. These stickers come with different messages like "This Tesla does not endorse Elon Musk" and "Anti-Elon Tesla Club”.

Rising Vandalism Against Tesla

According to a USA Today report, vandalism against Tesla has been reported across multiple states in the US. In Colorado, 42-year-old Lucy Grace Nelson was charged with malicious destruction of property for spray-painting anti-Musk graffiti at a Tesla dealership in Loveland. Officials also suspected that she threw Molotov cocktails at the store.

In another incident from New York City, nine persons were arrested outside a Tesla dealership during a protest dubbed as ‘Tesla Takedown’. In Maryland, someone had painted words “No Musk” and an “X” on the window of a dealership store in Owings Mills.

Reportedly, in Oregon, gunshots were fired at a Tesla dealership in Salem, which had already been the target of an arson attack in January. Meanwhile, in Tennessee, a man was charged last month for allegedly threatening to burn down a Musk-owned data centre in Memphis.

Why Is Tesla Being Targeted?

The USA Today report stated that Musk had become a divisive figure due to his political engagement and controversial statements. Musk, who was a vocal supporter of Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, has played a key role in implementing his policies. This includes mass layoffs of government employees and calls to dissolve federal agencies.

Internationally, the billionaire has been supporting right-wing parties. His call to back the German right-wing party AfD, and remarks urging the country to move beyond its past, received criticism. His comments were seen as being insensitive to the Holocaust.

Additionally, his public gestures have stirred the pot too. Some accused him of making a Nazi-like salute during Trump’s inaugural event, a claim Musk denies.

As per the report, Tesla is purportedly developing new security features to deter vandalism. Although the details are ambiguous, CEO Elon Musk responding to a suggestion on X (formerly Twitter) said that cars could honk at people.
