Elon Musk has criticised Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers’ proposal to introduce gender-neutral language in state laws. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), which Musk owns, he wrote, “Hi Mom, I mean “inseminated person”. This is crazy!!”

Proposed changes spark conservative backlash

Elin Musk’s remarks com in the backdrop of governor Evers’ budget proposal for 2025-2027, which includes revising traditionally gendered terms to make them more inclusive.

Under the suggested changes, words like “mother” would be replaced with “inseminated person,” “paternity” would become “parentage,” and “husband” and “wife” would be replaced with “spouse.”

Though these changes aim to make state laws more gender-neutral, they have been met with a lot of opposition from conservatives.

Wisconsin radio host Dan O’Donnell dismissed the revisions as “beyond parody,” while Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah responded with a stark warning, saying, “red flag!”

The Republican Governors Association (RGA) also criticised the proposal, with executive director Sara Craig saying, “Motherhood is the greatest privilege of my life. If Tony Evers reduces it to merely an ‘inseminated person,’ it signals a troubling shift in our society.”

Musk and Trump take stand against gender-neutral language

Musk has continued to voice his opposition, calling the proposed terminology “messed up.” His stance aligns with that of US President Donald Trump, who has consistently pushed back against gender-inclusive language and transgender policies.

Earlier this year, Trump issued an executive order called, “Protecting Women from Gender Ideology and Upholding Biological Reality in the Federal Government,” emphasising that sex and gender identity should remain distinct.

Trump also introduced another directive, “Keeping Men out of Women’s Sports,” aimed at preventing transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.

These measures have intensified the national debate over gender identity.

Ongoing debate over inclusive terminology

Discussions over gender-neutral language have gained traction in recent years, with terms like “chestfeeding” replacing “breastfeeding” and “birthing person” being used instead of “mother.” While proponents argue that these terms accommodate non-binary and transgender individuals, critics view them as unnecessary alterations to language that diminish biological realities.
