Why has Elon Musk's wealth suddenly dropped?

Tesla sales have been declining globally. According to a report from CNN Business, Tesla shares have fallen by around 20 per cent over the past month, with European sales dropping by 45 per cent in the same period.

This marks a stark contrast to the surge in November 2024 when investors rushed to capitalise on Musk’s endorsement of the newly elected US President Donald Trump.

The electric vehicle maker’s market value has now fallen below the $1 trillion mark for the first time since the US presidential election.

Musk’s personal net worth reached an all-time high of $486.4 billion (£386 billion) on December 17, according to Bloomberg.

NBC News suggests that Tesla’s declining popularity may be linked to Musk's polarising personal beliefs.

Controversies, such as the recent “productivity email” debacle surrounding his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), may also be contributing to Musk’s decline in personal popularity.

Gary Black from The Future Fund has suggested that Tesla's shares could decline further.
