Tesla's German sales fell by 76 percent in February. The sales have dropped steeply for a second consecutive month. Like Germany, the electric vehicle manufacturer's sales are down across Europe. Analysts blame the fall on Elon Musk's politics, n...

The plummeting sales signals a growing challenge for the Elon Musk-owned US electric vehicle manufacturer in one of its most important markets. However, overall sales of electric vehicles in Germany rose by 30.8 percent.
Sales of Tesla dips across Europe
Media reports stated that the slump in Germany is symbolic of a broader European downturn with Tesla’s sales falling in several nations. The sales have dipped by 26 percent in France. While in Norway, Denmark and Sweden, the dip ranged from 42 percent to nearly 50 percent, a New York Times report stated.
Despite Tesla's struggles in much of Europe, the UK saw a 20 percent increase in sales. However, its overall market shares still fell as competitors made gains.

Political controversy and market impact
According to the NYT report, analysts suggest that Tesla’s declining European sales are linked to Musk’s political activities, particularly, his vocal support for far-right parties. Musk's backing of Germany's Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party before the nation's elections likely alienated some prospective customers. His appeal for Germans to move beyond "a focus on past guilt" also received flak. The controversy also triggered activist-led boycotts. Groups in London are urging Tesla owners to switch brands and cancel accounts on Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter). In Strasbourg, stickers warning the billionaire to stay away from the EU were distributed. Lastly, in southern France, a group of Tesla vehicles were set ablaze in protest.
Sales decline extends beyond Europe
Tesla is facing challenges beyond Europe. In China, the largest EV market in the world, Tesla's production plummeted by nearly 50 percent in February. This happened due to fierce competition from local brands like BYD and Xiaomi. While Musk's political stance may not greatly influence Tesla's standing in China, the company is under increasing pressure from domestic manufacturers.
Tesla future outlook
Some of the sales decline can be attributed to consumers waiting for an updated Model Y. But, as per the NYT report, experts believe that political controversies and increasing competition are significant reasons for its dip.Despite the challenges, Musk has been persistent about Tesla’s future in self-driving technology. He has plans to introduce autonomous cabs.
Meanwhile, the upcoming financial reports and market reactions will be closely monitored as the company faces growing challenges in its global operations.
