The death toll from severe flooding in central and eastern Mexico has risen sharply to at least 64, with another 65 people still missing, authorities said on Monday, October 13. Amid the devastation, a viral video from the flood-hit region has captured hearts worldwide, showing an elderly couple holding each other in a desperate embrace as the floodwaters surged around them.

RT identified the couple as Don Esteban and Dona Isabel, who were seen comforting one another while trapped in Mexico’s deadly floods. The outlet reported that they were later rescued, and the whole act can be a picture-perfect scene of how gesture looks in love amid tragedy.

An Instagram page named mexicanworldstarfoo also shared the video, stating that “Heavy rains over the weekend caused the Cazones River to overflow, trapping a local couple and forcing emergency crews to carry out rescues across the region.” According to the page, witnesses said the pair was caught off guard by the sudden rise in water levels late Sunday evening.

Authorities confirmed that rescuers, aided by neighbors, managed to reach the couple and guide them through waist-deep water to safety, as per the Instagram page. Both were taken to a temporary shelter in Poza Rica, Hidalgo, where they are receiving medical and emotional support.

Officials said the torrential rains were triggered by the convergence of two tropical storms churning off Mexico’s western coast, striking at the end of an unusually heavy rainy season that has left rivers overflowing and hillsides dangerously unstable.

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that thousands of troops, along with boats, planes, and helicopters, have been deployed to support ongoing rescue operations, reports The Guardian. She said the military is assisting in delivering aid to affected areas, with over 10,000 personnel mobilized alongside rescue vehicles and equipment. Temporary shelters have also been opened to accommodate those displaced by the floods.
