El Chapo's godson is wanted in Mexico for allegedly murdering journalist

The Mexican government wanted the alleged murderer of a famous journalist, Lopez Serrano, to be deported to them. However, Lopez Serrano refused these charges and said he was being framed.

The Mexican government wanted the American government of Justice to extradite the accused mastermind of the murder of the renowned Javier Valdez-Cárdenas. This situation occurred after it was revealed that he might be released from the US prison.

Who is El Chapo's godson, also known as Lopez Serrano?

Dámaso Lopez-Serrano is 34 years old. He is the godson of El Chapo and is better known as El Mini Lic. Lopez Serrano surrendered to the American authorities in August 2017 when caught in the war with El Chapo's sons. He proceeded to plead guilty to drug conspiracy charges later in 2018.


On September 16, Judge Dana Sabraw sentenced him to jail time for a little over five years. Though these charges are for ten years, the judge said that Lopez Serrano has already spent half his sentence in custody. However, Lopez Serrano still has to pay a million dollars to the government. The judge declared this case extraordinary when El Chapo's godson spent his time on the verdict.

He was also let out on half his prison time as he surrendered and agreed to testify against his godfather, El Chapo.

What did the Mexican government say about this?

However, Mexico's attorney general wants him to be handed over to them so that they can prosecute him as quickly as possible. They are convinced that he orchestrated the plan behind the murder of the journalist, Valdez-Cárdenas.

The Sinaloan journalist was killed in broad daylight a few feet away from the office of Rio Doce. This murder was cited in a lot of protests among people.

However, El Chapo's godson has refused the charges, ultimately saying that he is being framed by the sons of El Chapo and corrupted Mexican officers. He was supposed to be on the stand to give proof against El Chapo, but soon realized that he was being asked questions about unknown matters.

Judge's statement on Lopez Serrano's case:

The judge said his exact involvement in drug cartels was difficult to ignore as he was their manager and leader. But his statements have given them a lot of information, and his cooperation is commendable as he is in harm's way. He was released from the San Diego jail later that day. During the court session, El Chapo's godson said that after all this, he would become a changed man.
