A major egg recall has been raised to the FDA’s most serious alert level after fresh tests uncovered dangerous Salmonella contamination. Shoppers across Texas are being urged to immediately discard or return certain cartons of Kenz Henz eggs following the expanded warning that now affects millions of products nationwide, as per a report by The Sun.

Which eggs are affected in the recall?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent advisory for several 12-count cartons of Grade AA Large Pasture Raised Eggs produced by Kenz Henz in Santa Fe, Texas, over a “high potential” for Salmonella contamination, as per a report by The Sun.

Consumers can obtain a full refund by returning the eggs to the place of purchase. According to the FDA, this upgraded recall is now classified as Class I, meaning it carries “a reasonable probability of serious adverse health consequences or death.”

How serious is the Salmonella contamination?

The expanded alert follows an earlier recall of more than six million eggs linked to Black Sheep Egg Company in Arkansas, where the FDA discovered Salmonella in 40 environmental samples during an inspection. Tests revealed seven different strains of the bacteria, as per a report by The Sun.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that Salmonella can cause serious illness, particularly in children under five, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems. Common symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, often appearing 12 to 72 hours after exposure.

In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream, leading to conditions such as endocarditis or arthritis. So far, no illnesses have been officially linked to the Kenz Henz recall, but the FDA emphasized that food safety recalls are often precautionary since contaminated products can remain in homes or be served in restaurants, as per a report by The Sun.

What’s behind the wider egg recall?

The contamination traces back to the Black Sheep Egg processing plant in Arkansas, which supplied eggs nationwide. Following the discovery of Salmonella at the facility, millions of cartons were pulled from store shelves.

Despite the recall, some contaminated items may still be circulating in households or restaurants. The FDA’s updated warning stresses that tracking every carton remains a major challenge, as per a report by The Sun.

Earlier this year, a separate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis caused the August Egg Company to recall about 1.7 million 12-count cartons. That outbreak led to 79 people falling ill and 21 hospitalizations, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

The CDC noted that infections typically cause diarrhea, fever, and cramps, lasting four to seven days, though some severe cases require hospitalization.
