Earth gets a new mini moon for two months: Will it be visible to the naked eye or telescope?
Earth is expected to briefly acquire a temporary companion—a small asteroid named 2024 PT5 which will behave as a ‘mini moon’.

The phenomenon, called a mini moon, will last for approximately two months, from September 29 to November 25, 2024, according to scientists, as per a report by Live Science.
Although this celestial event is intriguing, the mini moon will be difficult to spot for most skywatchers.
What is a Mini Moon?
A mini moon refers to a small celestial body, typically an asteroid, that is temporarily captured by Earth’s gravitational pull. These events are relatively frequent, with similar occurrences happening every few decades. The asteroid 2024 PT5, which was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) on August 7, is the latest to be drawn into Earth’s orbit. This newly detected space rock is just 33 feet (10 meters) wide, making it hard to observe without specialized equipment.

How does Earth capture Mini Moons?
Mini moons are captured from the Near-Earth Object (NEO) population, which consists of asteroids and other celestial bodies that pass close to Earth. NASA classifies any space object that comes within 120 million miles (190 million kilometers) of our planet as a near-Earth object, while objects within 4.7 million miles (7.5 million kilometers) are considered potentially hazardous. Fortunately, 2024 PT5 poses no threat to Earth, as mentioned in the Live Science report.According to researchers, the asteroid 2024 PT5 is an Apollo-class NEO, which follows an orbit similar to that of previous mini moons like 2022 NX1. Such short-term captures occur when these small bodies gain negative geocentric energy for a few weeks or months, resulting in them becoming temporary moons.
However, longer capture events, where objects remain in Earth’s orbit for extended periods, are much rarer and occur once every 10 to 20 years.

Will skywatchers be able to see 2024 PT5?
While the presence of a new mini moon is exciting for astronomers and space enthusiasts, most skywatchers will be unable to see 2024 PT5 due to its small size, as per a report by Space.com . At just 10 meters wide, the asteroid is too tiny to be visible to the naked eye or even most telescopes. However, its discovery and temporary orbit highlight the dynamic nature of the space around Earth. The Future of Mini Moons
Mini moons like 2024 PT5 are more than just astronomical curiosities. These small asteroids hold the potential to play a significant role in future space exploration. Research suggests that they contain valuable minerals and water, which could be used as fuel for spacecraft. As such, mini moons could serve as "stepping stones" for companies looking to mine asteroids and further humanity's ventures into space. In the case of 2024 PT5, calculations indicate that the asteroid will pass by Earth again in January 2025 and later in 2055
FAQs
What is a mini-moon?"Mini-moon" events occur when objects such as asteroids or space debris temporarily enter Earth's orbit, with some completing a full revolution around the planet before moving on.
Where can I see the mini-moon?
It's unlikely that we'll be able to see the passing mini-moon as it enters Earth's gravity.
