A 22-year-old driver who struck and killed four college students on a coastal highway in Malibu is currently being held on $8 million bail, according to authorities. The man was arrested on Tuesday as part of the ongoing investigation and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, as stated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Initially, the man had been arrested immediately after the crash on October 17 but was released the following day to allow investigators to gather evidence, as mentioned in a statement by the sheriff's department. The department also assured that they are diligently working to ensure justice for the victims' families.

The case has been handed over to the district attorney's office, the statement added. It remains unclear whether the man has legal representation at this time.

The tragic incident occurred when the driver of a BMW lost control while the Pepperdine University students were walking along the Pacific Coast Highway at 8:30 pm. The driver sideswiped at least three parked vehicles before crashing into the students and hitting two others, according to authorities.

Four women, identified as Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir, and Deslyn Williams, all seniors at Pepperdine University, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The details and circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be investigated by the authorities.
