According to Complex, Drake presented the film as a self-funded project and connected it to his long-standing interest in music videos.
Drake calls ‘FOMO’ a self-funded project
Ahead of its release, Drake described “Fear of Missing Out” as “self-funded surrealism” and said the story explores how people choose to use their time, relationships and opportunities.
In an Instagram post, the rapper encouraged viewers to act on things they have been postponing, including pursuing creative ideas, reconnecting with family, travelling or making difficult personal decisions.
The film is made with members of Drake's creative circle. Complex reported that he described it as a project directed and scored by his “family,” although details about the full creative team are limited at the time of reporting.
What is ‘FOMO’ about?
Drake has framed the film around one summer and the choices people make during it. A teaser offered a more surreal glimpse at the story, featuring Drake aboard a neon-green speedboat while narration contrasts a life shaped by avoiding risks with another built around embracing them.
The rapper also linked “FOMO” to an earlier point in his career, specifically the 2009 music video for “Best I Ever Had.” In a message to fans, Drake recalled the enthusiasm he had for making that video and used the comparison to explain why he remains invested in visual storytelling. Complex reported that the original video was directed by Kanye West.
“FOMO” therefore arrives partly as a statement about Drake's continuing interest in music videos at a time when artists increasingly rely on streaming platforms and short-form social content for visual promotion.
‘FOMO’ follows Drake’s busy 2026
The film also comes during an unusually active period for Drake. Pitchfork reported that his 2026 output included three albums, “Iceman,” “Maid of Honour” and “Habibti”, alongside an extensive collection of music videos.
With “FOMO” streaming currently, Drake is again using a visual format to extend his music-era storytelling.
