Serhou Guirassy starred for the Bundesliga side with two clinical finishes in the 14th and 24th minutes, giving Dortmund a strong first-half lead. Monterrey, however, mounted a spirited second-half comeback, with German Berterame heading home in the 48th minute after fine work from Jesus Corona and Erick Aguirre.
The Mexican side piled on the pressure in the closing stages, testing Dortmund’s resolve with series of back-to-back attacks. Corona remained a persistent threat, forcing key saves from goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and narrowly missing with several efforts. Berterame even put the ball in the net again, only for it to be ruled offside.
Despite Monterrey's intensity, Dortmund’s defence held firm, helped by timely substitutions that restored some composure. Guirassy had chances to complete a hat-trick but was denied by some fine last-ditch defending.
The result sets up a tantalising quarterfinal clash against Real Madrid in New Jersey on Saturday.
However, there will be no on-field Bellingham brothers showdown - Jobe Bellingham received a yellow card in the 28th minute, ruling him out of the tie against his brother Jude.
Veteran Sergio Ramos came close to a dramatic late equaliser, glancing a header off the post in stoppage time, but Dortmund saw out the win to complete the Club World Cup last-eight lineup.
