Dorothy Pitman Hughes’ country tour in the 1970s brought her into prominence as a black activist in America. Dorothy's pairing up with journalist Gloria Steinem formed a significant speaking partnership that strengthened America's second-wave feminist movement in the 1970s. Dorothy died of old age on December 1 at her daughter’s place in Florida.

Laying the foundation of Black feminism

Ms Hughes and Ms Steinem created considerable impact during their speaking tours across America. The pair spoke on gender and race issues and chose whatever venue allowed them, including college campuses and community centres. As a result, they could motivate black women to open out about their various problems and make them (black women) understand their rightful place in society. Feminism then was limited to the whites and confined to the middle class, with blacks mostly ignored.
