In "Nostalgia Patrol," Rita is invited to a theatre showing her vintage movies and paying homage to the cinematic craft. She accepts the invitation because she is depressed, bingeing on junk food, and feeling betrayed. She is surrounded by gas in the theatre, which causes her to enter a false reality similar to what the Scarlet Witch from Marvel does.
This was done for the House of M by Wanda Maximoff, who eventually destroyed the mutant population and created a utopia where she had her family back. The Marvel Cinematic Universe imitated this for WandaVision, where she would establish Westview and live with a conjured-up Vision and twin kids. This made her an even more giant monster and adversary to the Avengers and X-Men. On the other hand, Rita's paradise in Doom Patrol is preoccupied with her job, which gives her a false sense of security and happiness.
