With the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season forecasted to be above average—NOAA predicts up to 19 named storms and Colorado State University expects 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes—preparation is more important than ever. Experts emphasize that the most effective hurricane readiness begins well before any storm forms, ideally during periods of low weather activity.

1. Assess and fortify your roof

Your roof is the first line of defense against hurricane damage. Jon Abernathy, Director of Contractor Engagement at TAMKO, recommends a pre-season inspection by a qualified contractor to identify and address issues such as lifted shingles or damaged flashing before they lead to major leaks or structural failures during high winds. Upgrading to impact-rated shingles can significantly improve your home’s resilience and may also lower your insurance premiums.

2. Review and update your insurance policy

Many homeowners only discover gaps in their insurance coverage after a storm hits. Review your policy details, including deductibles and exclusions, before hurricane season begins.Assess whether your current policy covers hurricane-related damages, and consider upgrading roofing materials that may qualify for insurance discounts or reduce your deductible. Make sure all important documents are stored in a waterproof, easily accessible location.

3. Perform preventive exterior maintenance

  • Trim Trees and Branches: Remove loose or overhanging branches that could damage your home or power lines during a storm.
  • Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Ensure proper drainage to prevent water intrusion and flooding.
  • Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in or anchor patio furniture, grills, and other loose objects to prevent them from becoming projectiles.

4. Prepare an emergency supply kit

Build a kit with enough essentials to last at least 72 hours, even if you don’t expect to evacuate. Your kit should include:

  • At least one gallon of water per person per day
  • Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
  • First-aid kit with prescription medications
  • Flashlights, batteries, and a multi-tool
  • Copies of important documents and local maps
  • Hygiene items and supplies for pets

5. Develop and practice an evacuation plan

Know your evacuation routes and have a plan for where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, and where you’ll stay if you need to leave home quickly. Make arrangements for pets and communicate your plan with all household members. Sign up for local emergency alerts to stay informed about evacuation orders and storm updates.

6. Power and utilities readiness

Know how to turn off your electricity, water, and gas in case of flooding or evacuation. This can prevent further damage and hazards if lines are compromised during the storm.

7. Stay informed and connected

Monitor reliable forecast sources, including NOAA and local authorities, for the latest updates.Keep a battery-powered radio and extra chargers for mobile devices in your emergency kit.
