In another post, the actor made it clearer that he's referencing Ballerini, as he wrote, "I'm sorry for those who believed in us," he said, as quoted by PEOPLE. "It is what it is," Stokes continued. "Onwards and upwards," he also said. Representatives for Stokes and Ballerini, who according to PEOPLE had split in September, have not commented on the actor's posts.

Stokes' clarification of his relationship with the singer came after she performed her new song, "I Sit in Parks," at the CMAs on November 19, 2025. His Instagram stories came three days after he commented on one of Ballerini's TikTok videos promoting a new song from her revealing new EP, Mount Pleasant, according to PEOPLE. In the comments of the video, he slammed fans spreading negativity saying, "These comments are f---ing weird. Grow up," as quoted by PEOPLE.
He seemed to be responding to several comments on Ballerini's post that referenced both him and his ex-girlfriend and co-star, Madelyn Cline.
Amid all the speculations, the couple came together in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on November 7, 2025, where an onlooker saw them together at a restaurant "holding hands at the table and talking closely."
