Donald Trump's approval rating
President-elect Donald Trump has achieved a 54% approval rating, marking a significant rise from the 29% he held when he left the White House in January 2021. According to the Harvard CAPS/Harris poll, Trump’s approval now surpasses that of President Joe Biden, who stands at 42%. This surge in popularity reflects a growing acceptance of Trump’s leadership as he prepares to take office on January 20, 2025.

Unorthodox Cabinet Picks Spark Debate

Trump’s recent cabinet nominations have drawn widespread attention and sparked discussions about his unconventional approach. He has chosen Matt Gaetz, former Florida congressman, as attorney general, and Pete Hegseth, Fox & Friends weekend host, as secretary of defense. Other key nominations include Senator Marco Rubio as secretary of state, Representative Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations, and Dr. Mehmet Oz to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. These selections reflect Trump’s intent to bring a mix of political and media figures into his administration.

Shifts in Public Opinion and Party Approval

The poll, conducted between November 13 and 14, highlighted significant shifts in public opinion. While 91% of Republicans approve of Trump, support among independents stands at 49%, and 22% of Democrats have also expressed approval. Age demographics reveal that a majority of individuals aged 18 to 54 approve of Trump’s performance, while older voters remain more divided. In Congress, the GOP has gained control with narrow majorities, and their approval rating has risen from 46% to 49%, while Democratic Party approval has dropped from 47% to 44%.

Despite the surge in approval, Trump continues to face legal hurdles, including 34 counts of falsifying business records in a Manhattan case. A majority, 53%, believe he should still face trial, while 47% argue the charges should be dismissed. Meanwhile, public opinion on Trump’s leadership remains divided, with a small majority believing he is attempting to unite the nation, while others view him as a threat to democracy.
