Former US President Donald Trump expressed concern to associates in December 2020 that Iran might attempt to assassinate him in retaliation for killing Iranian commander Qassem Suleimani, Peter Baker and Susan Glasser claimed in a new book. Suleimani was assassinated in a US drone attack in January, 2020.
The book titled "The Divider: Trump in the White House 2017–2021" will be published next week.
Baker and Glasser chart Trump's strategy toward Iran, beginning with the tentative negotiations over the nuclear deal made by Barack Obama, continuing with the US withdrawal in May 2018, and concluding with the point in June 2019 when Trump agreed to airstrikes but later postponed them.
Trump said they shot down a drone sitting there with 150 dead people. Trump remarked at the time that this would have happened probably within a half-hour after he said go ahead. And he did not enjoy it. It didn't seem appropriate to him.
Later revealed that Tucker Carlson, a host on Fox News, was one of several who counseled Trump against launching the Iran attacks. Trump did authorize the Suleimani strike six months later.

Trump bragged about the strike during a rally in Toledo, Ohio, claiming that they stopped him and stopped him cold. Trump said that he was a villain and a murderous terrorist. He used to be one, however. He has left. But less than a year later, Glasser and Baker assert that Trump was not quite as confident, at least not in public.
According to Baker and Glasser, Trump and his advisers contemplated further attacks but decided against them because Trump's term as president was about to end.
