US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's much debated explosive verbal clash at the White House was a "manufactured escalation", Germany's likely next chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday, as per a report.

"It was not a spontaneous reaction to interventions by Zelenskiy, but obviously a manufactured escalation in this meeting in the Oval Office," Merz told a news conference in Hamburg, Reuters reported.

Merz, who is seeking to form a coalition after his conservatives won a snap election last month, said that Europe was now under pressure to act quickly.

"We must now show that we are in a position to act independently in Europe," he said.

The Kremlin said on Monday that someone needed to force Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to make peace after a clash with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office that showed just how hard it would be to find a way to end the war.

U.S Secretary of State Marco Rubio has not spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy since Friday's Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump, Rubio said on Sunday's "This Week" on ABC.

Rubio also said he has not spoken to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha since Trump and Zelenskiy clashed at the White House and failed to sign an expected minerals deal.

"We’ll be ready to reengage when they’re ready to make peace," Rubio said on the show.

Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday he believed he could salvage his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump after their explosive meeting in the Oval Office, but said talks needed to continue in a different format.

The Ukrainian president also told reporters that although he did not think the U.S. would stop its assistance to Ukraine - because that would only help Russian President Vladimir Putin - he was working to prepare for any challenges that may arise.

Zelenskiy said he remained ready to sign the minerals deal with the United States, and that he believed the U.S. would be ready as well.
