US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering signing an executive order to establish English as the official language of the country.

While English is the most widely spoken language in the country, the US has never had an official language at the federal level. But many states have already designated English as their official language.

Donald Trump’s executive order

If signed, Trump’s executive order would revoke a federal mandate requiring agencies and other federally funded bodies to provide language assistance to non-English speakers, CBS News reported on Friday, citing multiple White House sources.

But according to Fox Digital, federal agencies would still have the discretion to offer services in other languages.

The federal mandate was originally implemented during Bill Clinton’s presidency. While its reversal would no longer require agencies to provide multilingual services, CBS News noted that they would still be permitted to issue documents and offer services in languages other than English.

A White House document accessed by AFP stated that declaring English the national language would promote unity, enhance efficiency in government operations, and create a pathway for civic engagement.

Donald Trump signing the order

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on Trump’s plans to sign the executive order recognising English as the official language. According to Fox News Digital, the president could sign the order as early as Friday. Since assuming office for a second term, he has issued at least 76 executive orders.

Republican push for English

Republican lawmakers have previously attempted to pass legislation recognising English as the official language, but without success.

Trump, who made illegal immigration a key issue during his re-election campaign, has voiced his opposition to foreign languages entering the country. At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), he had expressed strong disapproval of foreign languages entering the US, suggesting that some were completely unfamiliar to the country's residents.
