Meta's statement
Vice President of Global Policy at Meta Joel Kaplan stated in a statement on July 30 that the inaccurate labeling of the photo by Meta's AI technology was caused by a problem with a doctored image that was circulating. Because of how much the original image resembled the edited one, the AI accidentally appended a fact-check label on it. Kaplan further spoke about why Meta's AI chatbot originally declined to respond to queries concerning the assassination He clarified that in times of breaking news, the excessive volume of information can overload AI systems. Instead of describing the incident, Meta trained its AI to respond generically in order to prevent giving false information.
